“The Anthropology of Tango" is a
multimedia show which was
recently
presented with great success in Houston, Texas. It documents the history of tango through
rare, historic, never-before-seen old films, dance demonstrations,
and lectures. Anton Gazenbeek, a passionate dance historian and
researcher, possesses one of the largest and most important tango
video collections in the world.
The
evolution of Argentine Tango Dance
The basis of
the show is, to demonstrate and reveal all the different styles and
forms of tango to the audience and it’s evolution from its birth in
the late 1800’s to present day. It consists of a perfectly unique
balance of three different sources of multimedia that transition
smoothly between stories and explanations told through lecture, one-of-a
kind video footage and show-stopping dancing that has left audiences
on their feet begging for more.
All forms of
tango dance are discussed in detail and represented from the
Canyengue of the 1890s to the Tango Salon of the 1940s to the Tango
Fantasia of the 1950s and the Acrobatic Tango of today. Antón
Gazenbeek, the artistic director of the show, has dedicated over
seven years of his life to investigating the history and roots of
tango dance. He has dug deep into the closed-off tango world of
Buenos Aires and has conducted research with the best of the
surviving old maestros of this art form. He has traveled as far as
Japan to further his collection of historic tango-related material
which not only includes rare videos, but also photographs, books,
dance manuals, magazines, LP records, CDs, and tango show theater
programs.
